Easy Ways to Eat Better in 2018

The Hood Answer Mom, Elizabeth M. Ward, M.S., R.D.

It’s January again, and who isn’t trying to eat better after the holidays?  Good nutrition is all about what foods to include, not about dietary deprivation.  Whole grains, and protein-packed foods, are high on the list of choices that can help whittle your waistline.

Recent research found that swapping refined grains, such as white bread, for whole grains, including oatmeal, prompts the body to absorb fewer calories while boosting calorie-burning.  Plus, whole grains have more filling fiber, and other nutrients, than refined grains.

As a high-protein choice, cottage cheese can also help you get back on track with good nutrition. Cottage cheese is packed with protein that keeps you fuller for longer, and cottage cheese is convenient, and versatile. You can tote Hood Single Serve Cottage Cheese with you for when you’re away from home, and you can prepare a variety of meals and snacks with Hood Cottage Cheese.

Stuffed Banana Oat Pancakes: Combine oatmeal and cottage cheese in a gluten-free meal suitable for any time of day (breakfast for dinner, anyone?).  Every portion provides a serving each of dairy, fruit, and whole grains, and supplies a whopping 27 grams of protein, eight grams of fiber, and as much calcium as a glass of milk.

Here are some additional ways to team up cottage cheese and whole grains in meals and snacks:

Stuffed Avocado: Do you have two minutes to make a delicious meal? Then stuffed avocado is for you.  It pairs Hood Cottage Cheese with Garden Vegetables and avocado, and provides protein and a serving of heart-healthy vegetables.  Add a whole grain roll to make it a meal.

Turkey Meatballs: This is one of my all-time favorite Hood recipes. Cottage cheese keeps the meatballs light, and ground turkey instead of beef lowers the calories and saturated fat. I always make a double batch and freeze half.  Serve over whole wheat pasta or in whole grain rolls for an easy meal.

Basil Pesto Cottage Cheese Dip: This tasty snack takes just five minutes to prepare and requires a mere three ingredients. Pair with whole grain crackers.
